Skeleton Crew

I wonder why I've been relatively obsessive about painting skeletons.  And not just any skeletons - macabre ones, depicting frivolous scenes.  I've taken my visual inspiration from the pin-up images of the past.. and also from adverts that glorified the housewife.  Some samples pepper this post.

I have been hit hard emotionally over the situation in Japan.  I imagine what it would be like to be in that region of that country - the utter and complete devastation.  I feel it in my own bones.

Meanwhile, life is going on.  Some people are barely aware of the suffering of the people of Japan or the trickle-down effects this is going to have on North America - both economically and health-wise.  Maybe that's for the best.  My heart knows that there is no defending from what's about to come, but my brain won't stop going over it.

The American Dream is in its death-throes, and we fiddle.  We bake cookies.  We watch reality TV.  We mull over kitchen renovations.  Are we learning how to garden for food?  Are we connecting with our communities?  Are we investigating alternative energies in our own homes?  Are we figuring out ways that we can end the utter corruption that permeates our culture?

No.

And so my skeletons represent this.  This death of a culture that has gone as far into 'greed is good' as it can .. and now.. we reap what we've sown.

Yes, and the banks want their pound of flesh so that there is nothing left too. Interesting work.
